Clinical Yoga

Clinical Yoga

Whether you are new to yoga, dealing with pain or discomfort that keeps showing up in your practice, or an experienced practitioner looking to go deeper, you get something most yoga classes cannot offer: one-on-one guidance from a physiotherapist who is also a registered yoga instructor (RYT-200).

Clinical yoga at Cadence is used as a therapeutic tool to help you achieve your treatment goals. Whether you are working to reduce pain, support your recovery from injury, or build the strength and movement quality to prevent problems from coming back, Clinical Yoga provides a unique way to you there.

Who Clinical Yoga Is For

People who experience pain or discomfort during yoga If certain poses aggravate your body, you get a clear picture of what is happening in each one, with alignment adjustments and variations tailored specifically to you.

Beginners get started with a clear foundation and cues you can carry into any class or home practice.

People who feel stiff You get targeted, guided work on the areas that feel stuck, with a clear understanding of why and how to address them.

Experienced practitioners If you want to explore more advanced poses like arm balances, forearm stand, or handstand, we workshop those poses specifically to break down the alignment and build the strength to get you there.

What Makes Clinical Yoga Different

Most yoga instructors know yoga deeply. Most physiotherapists understand movement and alignment. We do both.

Every cue, modification, and adjustment you receive is built around how your body actually moves, not a generic correction applied to everyone. You leave with a practice that feels genuinely better, builds real strength, and carries over into how you move through daily life.

What a Session Looks Like

Your session is fully one-on-one and 45 to 60 minutes. We start with a physiotherapy assessment to understand how your body moves, where your weaknesses and limitations are, and what needs to be addressed. From there, we work through yoga poses that target those specific areas, building sequences toward your goals with both hands-on and verbal cueing throughout. You leave each session with a better understanding of your body and tools you can apply in your own practice.

Clinical Yoga in Vancouver: Five Common Questions

Have questions about our approach, treatments, or what to expect during your visit? We’ve gathered answers to the most common questions to help you feel informed, comfortable, and confident before booking your appointment.

What is Clinical Yoga?2026-08-18T16:15:06-07:00

Clinical Yoga is a one to one yoga session led by a physiotherapist who is also a registered yoga instructor. It combines the movement and poses of yoga with the assessment and clinical knowledge of physiotherapy.

At Cadence Physiotherapy & Rehab in Vancouver, we begin with a physiotherapy assessment. We look at how your body moves and identify the areas that may be contributing to your symptoms. From there, we choose and adapt yoga poses to improve strength, mobility, balance, and movement control.

Because the session is designed around your body and your goals, Clinical Yoga feels less like a general fitness class and more like a personalized physiotherapy treatment.

What is the difference between Clinical Yoga and regular yoga?2026-08-18T16:14:44-07:00

In a regular yoga class, the instructor is teaching a group, so the poses and cues need to work for many different people. Even with modifications, there is not always time to explore exactly why a pose feels uncomfortable or difficult for you.

Clinical Yoga is completely individualized. You work one to one with a physiotherapist who understands both yoga and how the body moves. We can assess each pose, change your position, and find cues that make sense for your body.

Each session also works toward a clear goal, whether that is recovering from an injury, building strength, improving mobility, or feeling more confident in your yoga practice.

Can Clinical Yoga help with injury recovery?2026-08-18T16:14:26-07:00

Yes. Yoga can be a useful part of injury recovery when the poses are chosen and adapted with a clear understanding of your injury.

We use specific poses to target areas that need more strength, mobility, or control. If a pose places too much stress on the injured area, we can modify it and gradually progress it as your body becomes more comfortable and capable.

The one to one format gives us time to watch how you move and make adjustments along the way. This allows you to practise yoga in a way that supports your physiotherapy goals and your stage of recovery.

Can Clinical Yoga help me improve a pose I am struggling with?2026-08-18T16:14:10-07:00

Absolutely. You do not need to be injured to benefit from Clinical Yoga.

If there is a pose you cannot quite access, a position that feels uncomfortable, or a movement you have been trying to improve in class, we can use the session to workshop it together.

We look at what may be limiting the pose, such as strength, mobility, balance, coordination, or the way you are setting up the movement. We can then try different cues, supports, and positions to find an approach that works better for your body.

The goal is not to force your body into a shape. It is to help you understand the pose, build the physical capacity it requires, and practise it with more confidence and control.

Is Clinical Yoga covered by insurance?2026-08-18T16:13:41-07:00

Clinical Yoga may be covered under the physiotherapy portion of your extended health benefits when it is provided one to one by a registered physiotherapist as part of treatment for an injury or health condition.

Coverage may not apply when the service is used only for general fitness, wellness, sports conditioning, or flexibility. Every insurance plan is different, so we recommend checking with your provider before your appointment to confirm your eligibility, annual limits, and any referral requirements.
